One of the reasons that anime is so popular and influential around the world is the incredible diversity of topics. Yes, there are funny animal cartoons and fantasy heroes like American cartoons, but there are also series about cooking, board games, romance, and more. One of the most popular sub-genres is sports anime, which uses a hyperkinetic visual style to depict dramatic fights on the baseball field, the basketball court, or the ping-pong table.

This diving-focused sports anime was released in 2016 with 12 episodes and an OVA. The two friends they focus on, Pikari and Teko, are great fun to watch as one is very shy and the other is energetic and quirky. Teko doesn't even know how to swim at first, so it's fun.

The animation is what makes you want to be in a seaside town in the summer where you can immerse yourself.

2. All out
Football fans need not worry, there are sports animations that are all about football! The main character of this show is Kenji Gion, a boy who is completely obsessed with sports.

Like most sports anime, this is about the protagonist setting out to be the best player possible as he faces many obstacles along the way. It has 25 episodes in total and ran from 2016 to 2017.

3. Kuroko's basketball
One of the most popular sports anime along with Haikyuu !!, Kuroko no Basuke is a longer series with 75 episodes so you can binge at your leisure. It tells the story of a high school basketball team trying to reach the Interhigh Championship, an annual high school basketball tournament.

Although opponents have noted that the use of supernatural powers in a sports anime is unrealistic, fans have praised the series for perfectly weaving magical elements into basketball moves.

Unlike typical sports anime in which the main character wins unconditionally, the protagonist, Tetsuya Kuroko, and other characters encounter strong opponents. They fight, fail and face challenges. The series will keep you on your toes, making the success of the characters even more satisfying to watch.

4. Boys of joy !! (2016)
Born into a family of martial judo artists, Haruki Bandō has always expected him to carry on the family legacy. But when he hurts his back in training, the discouraged college freshman begins to think about trying something new.

His childhood friend Kazuma Hashimoto has an unorthodox proposal: to start an all-male cheerleading team. Together, they left respectable positions in their judo club and began recruiting members for the team.

Joy boys !! takes place in college rather than the usual high school setting, so you can expect more mature characters and a realistic portrayal of their cheerleading journey.

The main characters initially address the objections of their traditionally minded family about their choice to run the club. Yet the unprecedented all-male team perseveres, faces the stereotype that male cheerleaders are awkward, and defies gender norms.

5. Ping Pong animation
Based on a manga series by the eccentric Taiyo Matsumoto, Ping Pong The Animation retains that artist's unusual character designs and a love of Dutch angles and weird framing. Childhood friends Peco and Smile are members of the Katase High School table tennis team and over the course of the series' eleven episodes, they struggle with what it means to have a talent, both the joy and responsibility of having it. The anime version also delves into many of the supporting actors in the series, and it's a real treat to see director Yuasa Masaaki working with the material.
